What is grammar?

Do you need grammar at all?

There is a popular opinion going on that it’s possible to learn a foreign language without even bothering about its overwhelming and confusing rules. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to have a general outlook on the meaning behind the grammar itself and its function to fully decide whether grammar is an imperative during the language learning journey.

Imagine the world without the grammar principles. There is no more system behind the entire language to govern its composition, which means that anyone is free to communicate in the way that fits him or her best. Clearly, the lack of grammar existence would turn everything into the big and unsolvable mess as it would be nearly impossible to do simple things, like ordering the meal at the local restaurant. Why so? Well, the waiter would simply not see the difference between the time, place, request, and need as the grammar went missing. This is just an imaginary situation that explains well enough why grammar is a must-have for the proper communication in any language of the focus. Although, there is actually a need to clarify the way grammar comprises the language.

By its own definition, grammar is the structured and strict collection of principles that control the use of phrases, words, and clauses in the language. Usually, the scientists agree that grammar can be divided into the sub-branches categories, including morphology, syntax, and phonology. Each of them has their own distinct and specific function and it’s vital to have a gist about all of them.

The first study of the focus is morphology, or mainly, the one that concentrates on the verbal components of the language (words) and the ways they came to existence in a timely manner. It’s interesting that each modern language in one way or another has origins from the ancient ones, which at the end has led to the formation of the so-called language families. In the language you currently read, English, most of the words have the Germanic or Latin heritage, which is something that is often overlooked when people research what is grammar in English.

Nevertheless, there is much more to grammar than just the study of words as some of the critics may think. The words itself, logically, doesn‘t constitute anything out of themselves if they are not combined into the sentence, transmitting statements, questions, or commands. The syntax is the exact part of the grammar that helps to form proper sentences, ones that the waiter from the example above could fully understand. Most of the time, the syntax is a helpful aid for the formation of the word order, which is usually different in the language families.

The final piece of the grammar and the one people use the most is phonology, or, simply to speak, the study of how sounds that are produced are organized and correctly used. In a way, it is the phonology that enables us to distinguish the audible sounds from the letters. Moreover, it studies how the sounds interact with each other and rules that specify those interactions.

The next time you hear a person saying that the grammar is nothing and shouldn‘t be cared about in the language, you can surely talk about what you learned today.
