What did you learn about working with a team through this simulation? The main thing I learned through this simulation is that communication, collaboration, and teamwork is very important in being successful. For example, from the start, our team members communicated what each of their personal goals were and how many points that we got from accomplishing each of them. We collaborated on what our next move would be when It came to figuring out whether or not we would stay at the same camp or advance.

Teamwork was key because if we weren’t together and just ride to work on our own agendas, then we would have never made it to the top successfully. When a new challenge came, we tackled it as a team and not individually. We were much stronger working together rather than working against each other. In the end, working together really paid off for us. 2. What did you learn about leadership through this simulation? I learned that you don’t have to show your authority and that you don’t have to be controlling to be a good leader.

To be an effective leader, you have to be able to talk to people and be able to connect to the people you are working with. Letting everyone have a say in whatever decision needs to be made is a great way to get everyone feeling empowered and important. Depending on the type of team you have and the type of people you are working with lets you know what type of leadership style to use. Since our team was very self-motivated and productive, we didn’t have to rely on the leader telling us what to do. He would let the group know what the current situation was and asked how we should go about it.

This really helped us to have our own opinions and voice and it worked out well for us. 3. What was your role In this simulation? How did your Individual goals relate to the overall team goals and the goals of other Individuals within you team? I had the role of being the marathoner and my goals were to make it to the top, not get rescued, and avoid getting frostbite. My goals were actually pretty similar to my other team member’s goals except for the photographer. His goals consisted of staying an extra day at a camp and didn’t require him to make it to the top.

At first, I was worried that this was going to cause a problem in us making it to the top because his goals didn’t reflect mine at all. But after hearing what everyone else goals were, we came to a consensus and stayed at one base for an extra day since other members had that the same goal too. The photographer on our team sacrificed a lot of his goals because by doing that, he allowed more team members the ability to accomplish their goals. This was a very nice thing of him to because he didn’t have to do that but he did because he knew that his actions would benefit the team.

Even though he sacrificed some of his goals, he was still the best performing photographer In the . How well did your team perform? What were the major obstacles to outstanding performance? If you could do this simulation over again, what steps would you take to ensure a better outcome? Our team performed pretty well. We were the top performing team in class with a score of 87. If I had the chance to do this again, I would definitely pay better attention to the weather and expect the unexpected.

I was going off of forecasts and every time I guessed on a temperature, I was off by would forecast for -10 degrees but then when the day came, it was -20 degrees. My ululations had a major impact on the team because those forecasts were what told us whether or not we would get frostbite or possibly sick. It was extremely cold the first day at camp and instead of staying an extra day, we went anyways and one of our team members went into critical condition after the first day. I would also read the instruction better and not be so eager to make it to the top regardless of the weather.

We had trouble understanding at first what the different medicals supplies did and how they were supposed to be used properly. 5. How did your team handle conflicts between individual team members? In retrospect how could your team have handled conflict more effectively? Our team handled conflicts very well. We didn’t get into any arguments or to many disagreements. Our team had very good cohesion from the start and when someone spoke or didn’t think that an idea was good, everyone stopped and listened to what they had to say.

We didn’t cut each other off or disrespect each other by saying someone’s idea wasn’t good. Everyone was very nice to each other it worked out well for us. For instance, before making our final decisions, we each ran our decision with one another before confirming it. I would let everyone know what my weather prediction was and if they agreed, the medic would ask everyone what their health was and if they thought they needed supplies, and the leader would confirm with everyone their decisions before finalizing his decision. . Explain how your team communicated and handled decision making? Our team communicated surprisingly well and it was easy to talk to one another. At first we were kind of shy but after a few minutes everyone got really comfortable with each other. Our effectiveness in making decisions was excellent and we came to decisions quickly. While other groups seemed to overthrown their decisions, we solved the problems at hand in a timely manner. I think the reason for this is because we had no secrets from each other.

If one of was in critical condition then the team knew about it right away. If a person had a goal he wanted to complete, we already knew about it. All the goals that we each had turned into group goals because many of them were related to one another. 7. Discuss the role of the leader in your team. How was the leader chosen? What impact did the leader have on team functioning? How was the leader chosen? What impact did the leader have on team functioning? How could the leader have been more effective?

The leader in our group was very democratic and his main goal he was always the last to make his decision. Our leader was chosen by doing rosemary since no one really wanted the role of being the leader. No one knew what the leader was going to have to do so this is why it was a harder position to fill. Our leader was very effective in our group. He didn’t really take too much charge which was a good thing because everyone in our group was very self-motivated and intelligent. Everyone knew what their Job was in the group and what their goals were.

No one had to be told what to do or to stay on track. I can’t think of anything that the leader needed to work on. 8. What was the role of team dysfunction in your team (corrupting, negative personal conflict, free riders, and overly dominant team members) How did this impact team performance? If you believe your team did not suffer any dysfunction, what steps did your team take to prevent dysfunctional? Our team didn’t suffer any dysfunction which may have contributed to us being a top performing team in class.

I think one f the ways that we prevented free riders and overly dominant team members was by going around one by one and having everyone share what their goals were for the simulation and then looking at ways that everyone could get what they want. Luckily for us, we Just really clicked as a group and most of us didn’t really know each other before that simulation. We were all new to one another and this really helped us to come up with different ideas and suggestions. We didn’t have corrupting because everyone had an opinion about something in our group but we all handled in a manner that was respectful and courteous.
