After I Read The Book

After I read the book “Songs of Gold Mountain”, I learned more about the early life of American Chinese in SF Gold Mountain, and the book covers various aspects of the life of first-generation Chinese Immigrants, from longing for home to dealing with abusive Immigration officials. There are three chapters In this book that Impresses me a lot. They are Chapter l”lamination Blues”, Chapter 3 “Lamentations of Estranged Wives” and Chapter 5 “Rhapsodies on Gold”. There three chapters both elk about the hardship of first-generation Chinese Immigrants.

In 19th century, China’s economy went down, other powerful countries curved up China. There Is widespread poverty in china. People had to go to a foreign country to seek a new way out, a lot of Chinese people forced to emigrate to San Francisco. They hoped they could get a better life in united States. But it was totally different of what they dream of United States. Firstly, when these new Chinese arrived San Francisco, they weren’t allow to enter this country. They had to stay at Angle Island to submit to a battery of hysterical examinations and harsh interrogations.

If they passed, they were ferried to San Francisco to begin their new life. But it might not a good beginning to them, it might a terrible and hard beginning for them. The attitude of Americans towards Chinese immigrants are harsh and sometimes brutal. They endured a lot of stigma, discrimination and violence in the United States. They couldn’t find a good job. Even if they can find a job, these Jobs are very hard, and the wages is very low. In addition, the original Chinese immigrants are almost all men. They came to San Francisco just ant to make more money to support their families.

They missed their families, they cried every night. But they couldn’t do anything, they believed they would earn enough money that they could go back to their hometown.
