Leadership Styles in the Public Services Leadership Style Description (Pl) Comparison of Leadership Styles (MI) Authoritarian An authoritarian leadership is when a leader tells you what they want you to do and you have to do it there and then without arguing. For example, in the Army when you are fighting on the front line and the sergeant tells you to get down you have to so that you don’t get shot.
Authoritarian and democratic leadership styles are similar because both of these leaders get to decided what team final say is. But the way that they make the final decision is different because an authoritarian leaders strict and you have to listen to them no matter what they say, because they have the authority over all of the group and whatever this type of leader says Is always the final say as you can’t argue back. However, a democratic leader Is less strict as this type of leader Is somebody who gets everybody involved and listens to what they have to say.
Although they still have the higher authority but not as much as an authoritarian leader they still have the final say. With these types of leaderships been different in he way that they lead a group they are suitable for different public services. For example, when fighting on the front line in the Army this is best suitable for the authoritarian leadership as you have to do what the leader says because by trusting what they say you are saving your own life by doing whatever they tell you to do.
However, a democratic leader is most suitable for the Police because a commissioner would get the sergeants and constables Involved in a briefing on a case that they have been given, the leader is then having the final say In the the end on how to Andre the case they have been given. Democratic A democratic leadership is when a leader has control and still has the final say but encourages people in the group to be part of the decision making. For example, the Police because the Police chief would make sure that they include everybody in the discussion of a case that they have been provided with.
Laissez-fairer Laissez-fairer leadership Is when a leader allows a group of people to complete tasks in their own way which gets them motivated and the leader takes a step back because they know that the group of people undertaking the task has the correct mount of experience In order for them to do the tasks by themselves. For example, In the Police when a SOC Investigates a crime and finds the evidence In their own way and then reports it back to the leader.
Laissez-fairer leadership and team. But the way that they motivate the team is different because a laissez-fairer leader is very laid back because they allow the rest of the team to handle situations in there own. However, a transactional leader motivates the team in a complete different way as this type of leader needs to use rewards and punishments to get a team to do what they are asked to do. Seen as these leadership types are lead in way they are suitable for the same public service.
For example, the laissez – fairer leadership fits well with the Police because when the team has been given a case that needs solving then the COCO’S investigate the crime to find the evidence that they need and they do it in their own way to get the Job done. Although, transactional leadership is lead in a different way it is still suitable in the Police force, because when you do something wrong you get your badge taken of you but if you do something right then you get a promotion and you move up a rank. Transactional Transactional leadership is where a leader uses rewards and punishments to motivate a team.
For example, in the Police when you do something wrong you get your badge taken of you but if you do something right you get a promotion. Transformational Transformational leadership focuses on the team’s performance as a whole, as the leader gets all the team thinking at the same time like in a discussion instead of them thinking by themselves. For example, in the Fire Service because the leader get the team thinking about how to put a fire out because they need to use certain strategies n order to make sure that the process is quick and that everybody that is in the burning building is out of the building safely.
Transformational and bureaucratic leadership styles are similar because they both use their power to keep their team involved and to lead them. However, the way that they use their power to lead a group is different the one an another because a transformation leader has the main aim of encouraging a team to work together and think as a whole instead of thinking by themselves. Whereas, bureaucratic leadership focuses mainly on the rules and reoccurred and does everything by what the rule book says instead of being able to encourage a group of people to be involved on a case or a task that is at hand in their own way.
With these types of leadership been lead in different ways they are each suitable for different public services. For example, transformational leadership is suitable for the Fire Service because the leader gets the team thinking about how to put a fire out in a building, as they need to discuss a certain strategy in order to put the fire out and save the people that are trapped inside the building. Moreover, the eructation leadership is suitable for a complete different field of service which is the FBI the reason for this is because they play things by the book because the rules protected them from the governments free speech.
Also by following procedure they were able to write new guidelines for their own domestic investigations. For example, when they are handing an investigation they need to analyses all the evidence they collect before arresting somebody. Bureaucratic procedures to manage the team’s performance. For example, in the FBI because they play things by the rule book. People-orientated People – orientated leadership is a style of leading which the participation of all the team members is the main focus.
For example, in the Fire Service the leader of the team gets everybody involved on putting the fire out so that all the people trapped in the fire are out safely. People – orientated leadership and task orientated leadership are similar because they are both determined to focus only on there main aim. Penthouse both leaderships are determined to focus on the main aim, they both have different aims that they focus on. For example, people – orientated leadership has the main focus of making sure that everybody is involved.
This type of leader concentrates mainly on the participation. Of the whole team not Just one person. Furthermore, task orientated leadership still has the determination to focus on there main goal, but the goal that they focus on is different. For example, they tend to focus on the task that is ahead of them and they don’t worry about anything else that is going on around them. In addition, they both have different way of leading a group but they are still suitable for the same public service which is the Fire Service.
The reason why this public services is suitable for people – orientated leadership is cause the leader of the Fire Service gets the rest of the firefighters involved in putting the fire out in order to save life’s. Moreover, task orientated leadership is also suitable for the Fire Service because the leader of the firefighters focuses on saving people’s life’s as the is task that is ahead of them, but they don’t worry about anything else that is happening around them.
For example, they wont worry about destroying the building as they need to get the people out of the building safely. Task Orientated Task orientated leadership focuses on the Job at hand and they don’t worry about anything else that is happening around them. For example, in the Fire Service their main focus is saving people and putting a fire out and it doesn’t matter what they destroy as long as they get the Job done. DISTINCTION – Discuss the pros and cons of the different leadership styles used in the public services.
At least two public service must be discussed. Army and the Fire Service. Authoritarian leader An authoritarian leader is strict because they tell you what to do and you have to do it. This type of leadership is suitable for the Army because in a battle there is no time authoritarian leader you are not wasting time and when an army troop has to go carry out a dangerous task it is showing that army troops have full trust in their leader. However, in the Fire Service they will not need an authoritarian leader because this leader is not suitable for the Fire Service.
The reason for this is because the Fire Service works well as a team, as they use the rest of the teams input into making decisions on how to make the task that is at hand successful. Democratic A democratic leader is the type of person that can involves the rest of the group in decision making, but they still have the final say. This type of leadership is not suitable in the Army because they do not have time to have discussion as it is a very hand on type of public services and things have to be done quickly there and then instead of waiting to have a strategy in mind.
On the other hand, this type of leadership is suitable in the Fire Service because before a fire the Firefighters have a quick briefing on what the situation is answer they would then plan on how they are going to rescue people that are trapped in side the burning building. Laissez-fairer A laissez-fairer leadership is where the leader is very laid back and doesn’t get involved he/she leaves the team to do it. This type of leadership is suitable for the Army because the leader may have a smart,on task and dedicated team that he/she can rely on to get the Job done.
Also, when in a war the leader always stays back at the base and doesn’t go out on the front line but the Army troops are well experienced and know what they are doing. So the leader shahs full trust in them to do it successfully. Moreover, a laissez – fairer leadership is also suitable for the Fire Service because this style of leading could be used by an officer. As they would send here team into a burning building to rescue civilians whilst he/she is outside securing the area, a leader must have a dedicated team in order for this to work properly.
Transactional A transactional leadership is where a leader would use rewards and punishments to motivate a team. This type of leadership is suitable for the Army because it is effective in training when new recruits are been taught what to do. Also if they do something wrong they get punished and learn not to make mistakes. For example, when the team is on a bush craft survival task they may get extra food if they omelet the take, or they might get no food if they fail the task.
Although, this is suitable for the Army it is not suitable for the Fire Service because the team of firefighters don’t need to be motivated by using rewards and punishments because this type of service focuses on saving life’s of the people around them which is helping citizens of a community. Transformational Transformational leadership is the type of leadership that focuses on the teams performance as a whole and inspires their team by talking to them about future outcomes that can be achieved.
This type of leadership is suitable for the Army cause a high ranked officer may give a speech to a group of troops to inspire them and give them a morale boost before a battle. Moreover, this type of leading could also be suitable in the Fire Service because an officer could give a speech to a team of firefighters in order for them to feel more proud of themselves for what they do to save people. Bureaucratic A bureaucratic is the type of leader that playthings by the book.
This type of leading is going to happen during the task that is at hand. Also everything must be done perfectly otherwise people may die or get seriously injured during a battle. Where as in the Fire Service is also suitable for this type of leadership. The reason for this is because firefighters get told how to put the fire out so they play things by the book because they have to be fully equipped before going into the burning building.
Also, if there is people trapped inside then they would have some firefighters putting the fire out while some are rescuing the people that are trapped, to ensure that everything is done safely. People-orientated People-orientated leadership is the type of leading that has the main aim of ensuring that the team are all participating. This type of leading is suitable for the Army because during a battle you need to have as much men/women fighting in the front to line as you can in order for the result to end positively.
Also, you need to have people back at the base in case somebody gets injured then they need to be dealt with by first aid. Also, this type of leading is suitable for the Fire Service because by having the participation of the whole team then the result of the fire will end positively because they have all there firefighters working together on the task then everybody will be out of the fire safety and the fire will have been out out. Task orientated Task orientated leadership focuses mainly on the task that is at hand and don’t worry about what gets damaged along the way.
This type of leadership is suitable for the Army because Even though it takes a while for a battle to end they are still putting there main focus on trying to get the Job done which Is what a task orientated leadership is all about. But in a way they are not task orientated leadership because they are bothered about what damage happens along the is because troop can get injured or even die.. Also, task orientated leadership is suitable for the Fire Service as ell because they focus on saving the lives of people and putting them fire out and they don’t worry about what damage they do along the way, as long at the fire is out.

To respond to, and deal with the collision; a number of very important team leaders have to be present to coordinate the operation. Please choose one team leader who will be part of the response and discuss the following. The position of the team leader Chief fire officer Their responsibilities The responsibilities of a chief fire officer is to organism all the firefighters and time give them certain Jobs to do.
How may they need to coordinate multi-agencies They may need to coordinate multi-agencies by talking to the paramedics the see if anybody is trapped as they have the equipment to get them out of the cars or lorries. What leadership skills and qualities are needed Leadership skills and qualities that they need are professional conduct as they need to look approachable and also they need to have good communication as they will need to communicate with other agencies and also the people trapped inside the icicles.
Types of communication needed they will need to talk to the people trapped in the vehicle’s to make sure that they are k and so that they don’t injure themselves more that they already are. The importance of decisions that need to be made It is important that the best decisions are made so that everybody gets out of the vehicles safely and so that your own life is safe as well as others. How adaptable the leader will have to be The leader would have to be able to adapt easily to the situation as they would have to act fast so that the most injured people are out first. How organized they have to be
The chief fire officer would have to be well organized with what is going as they will need to divert traffic, get equipment ready to get people out of the cars and lorries. Why multi tasking is important Multi-tasking is important as you will need to make sure that your are briefed by the other agencies as well as making sure that your team is doing the right thing. Why planning and motivating is important Planning and motivating is important because you need to be able to get your team doing what they need to do so that the situation is solved correctly. Also you need to do planning so that the Job is done properly.
