Metrology Lab

Steel toe capped boots and boiler suit. Objective In this Laboratory the objective Is to measure the angle of the tapered steel bar. This Is to be done using a sine bar, Slip gauges, dial gauge and a stand. The angle will be worked out using Pythagoreans theorem. Also precautions must be taken to maintain accurate results. Apparatus Sine Bar, Slip gauges, dial gauge indicator and stand, scientific calculator, steel rule.

Dial Gauge indicator Stand Specimen Sine bar Apparatus together Slip gauges 1) Wipe before use ) Do not handle unnecessarily 3) Wring carefully 4) Place used Slips in lid of box Slip gauge Writing on the slip gauge Indicates Its size Procedure 1) Clean all surfaces before use. 2) Place the specimen on top of the sine bar and use plasticize to hold the specimen in place. (Make sure that no Plasticize gets in the gap between the components). 3) Estimate by using a ruler the height of the stack of slip gauges needed to ensure that the component is horizontal. ) In calculating the height the best method is to get a result for H which is higher then necessary and also a result or H which is lower than necessary. After this use the median of both results. Continue this until the height is known. This procedure should need no more than 5 tries. 5) After calculating H you are now able to calculate the angle. This Is done using Pythagoreans theorem. Example calculate the height and the angle. The above procedure was used and the result and conclusion are shown below. Result Height = 15. 08 mm Slip Gauges used = 14 mm + 1. 8 mm (Sine theta= opposite over hypotenuse) Theta -SST (inverse) 15. 08/100 Theta = 8. 67329 Degrees Conclusion The Gauge did not move considerably while crossing the surface of the specimen. * There may have been inaccuracies such as the specimen being slightly dirty thus giving a slightly incorrect answer * The plasticize may have been stuck between the two components which would mean that the specimen was not flat against the sine bar. I believe the answer shown in results was reasonably accurate. All precautions were taken to make sure that the experiment was partaken as accurately as possible.

A height which only contained two decimal places may have changed how accurate he result was as the more decimals used the more accurate the final result will be. An angle of 8. 67329 was found. This was calculated using sine?opposite over hypotenuse. If the result for height is accurate therefore this result is also accurate as they a proportional. If one changes then the other changes also. 8 results were found before the final result. The results before the final one were 15. 04 and 15. 12 If all precautions were taken into account correctly then the angle of the ground tapered bar is 8. 67329
