Driven From Within Michael Jordan

Mark Avarice is a story about a man wanting to be perceived as a person who played his best in all facets, not Just scoring (5). This story tells the intriguing and successful story of Michael Jordan, the best basketball player on Earth and a man who loved a challenge.

I will discuss three points that Interested me In the book; how Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team when he was a sophomore, how his hunger for challenges on ND off the court helped him to succeed, and also how his positive and motivated attitude kept him going. Michael Jordan was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York to James and Jibe Jordan; he was the fourth of five children. During Michaels childhood he was more Interested In baseball but became Intrigued with basketball because his older brother was involved in the sport.

In Michaels sophomore year he was cut from the Varsity basketball team but over that year he grew 4 inches and made the team the next try-out. Michael was named a McDonald’s All American when he was a senior, which led to him receiving a scholarship to University of North Carolina. During his time playing basketball at UNC he received the AC Freshman award and also won the 1982 college basketball championship with a winning shot.

Michael was drafted to the Chicago Bulls while he was In college. HIS college years were not all great unfortunately as Michaels father was murdered during this time. The first interesting point that I want to discuss is the fact that Michael was cut from his Varsity basketball team when he was in 10th grade. Michael was a settable player for the JP team and could be moved up to the Varsity team when the JP season ended but Coach Hiring made the decision to not move him up (55).

Michael was very surprised by this but he took the Initiative to make himself a better player and coach Horning’s decision drove Michael to get better. Michael was willing to do anything to be a part of the Varsity squad so he asked to be the statistician and he worked during the off-season to get better because of being cut from the team (55). He would be picked up at 6:AMA before school to work for an hour on his skills ND then he would shower and go to class (60). He had the dedication and drive to make himself Into the world’s best basketball player.

Another Interesting point that I wanted to discuss Is Michaels hunger and eagerness for any challenge. He pushed himself in every aspect whether it was monopoly, pool, golf, ping-pong, bike riding, or playing Pace Man (168). He set out to achieve something and pursued everything with the same passion that he did basketball. Michael states that he has missed more than 9,000 shots in his career, he as lost almost 300 basketball games, and on 26 deferent occasions he was trusted to make the game winning shot and missed It.

He has failed over and over and over hit a baseball as well as he could when he was younger, it was a challenge and that was what he loved. He says that is why he retired from baseball with no regrets; he took the challenge and had fun doing it. The last interesting point that I would like to discuss is how throughout Michaels life he always maintained a positive and motivated attitude. Michael shows his daily titivation by stating that he is not out there everyday Just to find out what it feels like to sweat (87).

Michael also shows his motivation to himself and his teammates by stating that you have to rise to our level, we are not going to drop down to yours. I apply this to everything that I do (102). Michael always maintained his positive outlook on life and his success by always turning a negative situation into a positive one (164). In conclusion, “Driven From Within, Michael Jordan”, written by Mark Avarice, is about a man who took every aspect of life as a challenge and worked on that halogen everyday to achieve it.

Michael Jordan became the best basketball player by living his life in a positive and motivated fashion. The main points that interested me were how he was cut from his Varsity team and how it drove him to get better, how eager he always was for new challenges and how he approached every aspect of his life the same way that he approached basketball, and how through it all he always maintained a positive attitude and remained motivated. After reading this book I’m sure of one thing, “There’s only one Michael Jordan” (202).
